Tapestry of Touch (UK Exhibition):
08-Feb-2014 to 28-Jun-2014
About the Event: Tapestry of Touch – a ‘hands-on’ arts exhibition to raise awareness of sight and hearing loss.
The ‘Tapestry of Touch’ - a massive tapestry made of thousands of pompoms will offer visitors the chance to explore art through their sense of touch with a series of interactive accessible exhibitions around the UK.
Richard Kramer, Sense Deputy CEO, said:
“For people who can’t see or hear too well touch can be important to help them find their way around, communicate, learn and connect with the world around them. Most art exhibitions are ‘hands-off’ - we wanted to create an accessible ‘hands-on’ experience for all audiences, to engage with art and understand a bit more about sight and hearing loss.”
Visitors are invited to close their eyes and shut their ears to feel the artwork and find their way around the exhibition space, and eye masks and ear defenders are on hand for those who would like to try them. There will also be the chance to get creative and make more pompoms to add to the tapestry as the exhibition continues.
The tapestry was created as part of the ‘Great Sense Pompom Challenge’ – a campaign to raise awareness of deafblindness and dual sensory loss. Campaign supporters from across the UK and beyond – including India, Peru and Australia – crafted an astonishing 6,000 pompoms for the colossal tapestry.
Celebrity supporters, including fashion designer Alex Noble, celebrity stylist Katie Greengrass and artist Stella Vine, also created pompoms for the tapestry.
Made from a range of materials, from yarn and tinsel to paper and rubber and even supermarket bags, the pompoms - of all sizes, colours and textures - represent the immense creativity and bags of enthusiasm of everyone involved in the campaign.
During the ‘Great Sense Pompom Challenge’ pompoms went swimming with a synchro team covered a head teacher at an Exeter school, climbed Scafell Pike, tried their luck at Bingo featured on an online platform visited by more than 3,000 people.
Now their journey continues with the ‘Tapestry of Touch Tour 2014’ starting from Leeds on 8 February and going on to venues all over the country including a final exhibition in London

Contemporary Sculpture & Mompesson House -Material connections across the ages (UK Exhibition):
15-Mar-2014 to 02-Nov-2014
About the Event: A National Trust property, Mompesson House in The Close, Salisbury with The Veronica Stewart Arts Trust curated by Annette Ratuszniak (The Elisabeth Frink estate and archive), is hosting a unique exhibition where contemporary sculpture by emerging and some of Britain's most renowned sculptors is being shown within the rooms and gardens of this beautiful 18th century domestic house. The idea that historic room settings are somehow definitive belies the real nature of the past and present, which is subtle and often elusive. This exhibition, curated by Annette Ratuszniak, looks at the connections between selected contemporary sculptures and the historic objects, furnishings and architectural fabric of Mompesson House. Bringing to light the evolving cultural stories and use of materials that have shaped lives and homes across the centuries. Outstanding and diverse work by over 20 sculptors will be on show, including pieces by Elisabeth Frink and Peter Randall Page, as well as new works specifically created for the house and garden by Sher Christopher, Laura Ellen Bacon, Richard Jackson and Gillian McCormick working with eco-architect Tom Thompson.

STRIP:Joint African Strip cloth in a new light... (UK Exhibition):
12-Jun-2014 to 17-Jun-2014
About the Event: The traditions of strip cloth have been part of West African culture for centuries and are the inspiration for STRIP:joint, an exhibition of exciting and vibrant pieces, given a contemporary twist by Liz Hewitt.
These vibrant heavily stitched strip cloths are displayed alongside original traditional and contemporary mud cloths from Mali, Ghana & Burkina Faso.
The cloth used by Liz is hand woven from hand spun cotton and then painted with mud or left undecorated, in West Africa. Starting with the undecorated natural coloured strip cloth, Liz uses raw edge appliqué techniques to attach a variety of silk / satin pieces, and hand stitching to create the texture and patterns found within trees. Finally she hand dyes and / or paints the pieces to produce vibrant coloured cloths.
Liz draws her inspiration from the traditional mud cloths; and also the relationship between humanity and nature, in particular the customs and ways in which mankind relates to trees in everyday life. Trees have a powerful presence in the landscape and have always played a significant role in our lives. The beliefs of the Ancient Celts, that trees can inspire, soothe and sustain us spiritually and physically have been a major influence on her creative life.
