Come
along and stitch yourself into history
by contributing to the World's Longest
Embroidery! The record is currently held
by Margaret S. Pollard (Great Britain)
for stitching scenes from C. S. Lewis's
Narnia stories, 1,338ft in length, and
the Guild intends to beat this feat by
inspiring people to contribute stitches
to our great embroidery which is travelling
to a number of venues around the UK.
The
attempt on the world record is organised
by the Embroiderers' Guild and in association
with the National Trust, which supplied
600 metres of traditional calico cloth
woven at Quarry Bank Mill. Anchor threads,
needles and scissors for the project have
been donated by Coats Crafts UK.
The
embroidery is available for you to see
and add to at the UK venues hosting the
Guild exhibitions art
of the STITCH 2003 and SAMPLE, Stitch
2004 and other venues. Full details
of dates and venues are now available
on the web site.
Visitors
of all ages at these events are invited
to stitch themselves into history by adding
to the embroidery. Add your name too to
ensure your participation in this historic
and fun event is properly documented.
With
the help of members of the public, so
far approximately 250 metres have been
stitched, meaning that we are well on
target to break the existing record by
the time the piece is measured up at the
Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra
Palace in October 2004!
