Bringing together work by artists from all over the world Art of the Stitch 2001, from the Embroiderers’ Guild, in association with Coats Crafts UK, presents the best of good contemporary embroidery and design. Art of the Stitch 2001 is shown in conjunction with Generation, at the prestigious Mall Galleries in central London, and the purpose built Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead.

This year 462 artists from 34 countries offered 754 works for selection.
70 works from 59 artists representing 8 countries were finally selected based on the remit "to produce an exhibition which represents the breadth of good contemporary embroidery and design". The work could be in any media, stitched or derived from stitch.

art of the STITCH is accompanied at the Mall Galleries and the Williamson Art Gallery by Generation. This exciting exhibition showcases the talent of four contemporary artists working in textiles who have been commissioned by the Embroiderers' Guild to respond to an early 17th century embroidered bed hanging from the Guild's 11,000 piece museum collection.
