A Jacobean Gem

With shade 206, bring the needle up on the inside line at the left side of the central vein. Fill in this outer band with satin stitch, fanning the stitches to travel around a curve and keeping them tightly together for a point.

Area G (small leaf): satin stitch

Using shade 203, this leaf is worked identically to small leaf/area E.

Area H (small leaf): satin stitch

The outer band of satin stitch is worked in shade 644 and the inner area in shade 205, leaving a small unworked area between the two colours.

Area I (incomplete leaves at top): satin stitch

Left leaf worked in shade 202 and right leaf worked in shade 203.

Area J (stems of small leaves): broad chain stitch

This stem sweeps down over the main stem and is worked in shade 156. Bring the needle up at the top of one of the branches of the stem and work broad chain stitch all the way down the design line. Complete the remaining branch in the same way, bringing it to meet the other stem. The leaf vein and tiny stems of the upper small leaves are also worked in broad chain stitch.
