AGM LECTURE ONLY: Dr David Bostwick £12.50 inc. VAT The luxury furnishings of the Renaissance Palace at Stirling, enjoyed by Mary Queen of Scots, were left behind when she fled from Scotland. From 1569 to 1584 Mary was held in the custody of George, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. His wife, known to history as Bess of Hardwick, shared a love of embroidery with the captive queen. Over the years they, their household staff and professional embroiderers worked some of the most important Elizabethan embroideries to survive. This lecture seeks to explain the allegory and symbolism in the hangings, table carpets and cushion covers and their significance in the schemes of interior decoration designed by Mary and Bess. |
